Must one sister suffer in poverty while the other sister lives in the lap of luxury? This question plagued Harriet Clifton incessantly. Inviting herself to her widowed sister Cordelia's posh London townhouse for the season was surely the only way to meet a suitable partner - as well as to escape droughty old Pringle House forever. The vain Cordelia was meanwhile casting her net for the notorious Marquess of Arden, a man who preferred to court a mistress rather than wed a wife.

Who would have believed that the Marquess would succumb to Harriet's countrified charms? Or that Cordelia would stoop quite so low as to try to conquer the Marquess at her own sister's expense?

ABOUT THE SERIES

The Endearing Young Charms collection are lighter romances from the countryside with highlights including a botched marriage, a witty governess, unexpected inheritance, and the courtship of prime Corinthians.

This is one of Ms Chesney's stranger, more gothic novels. It is slightly skewed in tone, slightly melodramatic, and fraught with the virgin fears of sex. That is not to say it was a bad book, it wasn't, it was actually very interesting. But... It is one of the weird ones that this author occasionally wrote, so reader beware. It's hard to put my finger on exactly what is weird about these books. They are just slightly off. The plot is deceptively simple - in this case, the poor relations invite themselves to Town and make a splash - and the characters are the traditional archetypes: innocent debutante, professional invalid spinster aunt, evil older slutty sister, put-upon spinster companion, and world-weary, hardened rake, but devastatingly attractive hero. Add a Byronic young cousin to the hero and you have your typical Regency cast. But each of the characters seems just a tad skewed either in their reactions to events or In their internal monologues. The heroine is far too gullible, the sister too evil, the companion too cowardly, the aunt too missish, the cousin too melodramatic, and the hero far too cynical. Together it works, but the story is a little too serious, too dark, to be a farce and not enough absurdist to be a dark comedy. It is just awkward enough to be unsettling but not awkward enough to impact the enjoyment of the experience. It was good, very well-written. I do highly recommend this book to all Regency Romance lovers.

I read this free on KU. I'll say it again, I haven't enjoyed this series. Be sure to read the premise of the series in the blurb and you'll understand why these stories are difficult to like. Here the h is treated extremely badly by her sister. She and her aunt live in poverty in the country while the sister lives in luxury in the city. The h's sister married an older man with money and when he died, she sold off his estates and that's how she gained money. The sister in aunt are only able to live in the family home because their father's will made it impossible to sell. The h meets the H by accident when his younger cousin shoots two of their precious hens. They don't think they'll meet again until the H sends them money for the hens. The h decides to take her aunt to London to see their sister. The sister is now aiming for marriage to the H and by coincidence the main characters meet when the h is being told to leave. The sister has to take the h and her aunt in because she'd look bad in front of the H. This is a bit of a Cinderella story with gothic undertones. The H's young cousin and the h's sister make things very difficult. It's a strange story but not in a good way.
The novel is a pleasant reading with the usual style of Marion Chesney, witty and with a bit of romance in it to please the Reader. Maria Rennard
This was a good book by one of my favorite authors with all the usual troubles and problems, but sometimes that's a comfort.
Marion Chesney has always delighted even when writing as MC Beaton. This evil stepmother is now the evil sister and is as wicked a character as can be imagined. All's well that end well, in this charming fairy story,
M.C. Beaton doesn't write these regency romances any more but what fun they are. They are "romantic" but they are so comical - the characters so funny - you will find yourself laughing out loud. She must have written about 50 of these - years before her popular mysteries now - and I've read and enjoyed all of them.
I highly recommend this story. It has everything, intrigue, mystery, romance, etc. relaxing and fun, but not boring in the least.
Harriet is a charming, hard-working heroine who's been living a life of drudgery and destitution, trying to keep herself and her Aunt fed with a vegetable garden, eggs from their chickens and shooting game on her dilapidated country property. The Marquess of Arden and his cousin Bertram stumble upon their home after getting lost on their travels. Arden is very kind to Harriet and her Aunt, and Bertram shows an interest in Harriet. After enjoying a very pleasant visit with lively conversation, Arden leaves them a basket of delicious food and fine wines.

This makes them realize how badly they have it - they are lonely with no visitors and almost starving - they decide to travel to London to show up on the doorstep of Harriet's rich, selfish sister. The sister, Cordelia, is one of the most heinous type of villains. 1) Harriet and her Aunt are under her roof so they can't get away from her cruel treatment and cutting remarks. 2) Sometimes Cordelia pretends to be nice, so her behavior is erratic and confusing. 3) Family is supposed to help each other, so Cordelia's cruelty is especially alarming.

The Marquess of Arden is an OK hero. He's consistently kind to Harriet, but it takes him a while to get on board with the romance. And he does a lousy job of protecting Harriet from Cordelia and eventually a second villain which I won't spoil by revealing. Overall the plot is very good, with many opportunities for Harriet to prove her worthiness as a heroine, including rescuing a duchess from a fire and other exciting events. Readers who like a lot of action should be entertained! There is not the humor I generally expect in a Chesney/Beaton book, so if you're looking for a humorous read, this is not it. The villains are pretty dark, but the good characters are the focus of the story and they carry the day in the end. Overall a satisfying read that I'm glad I read once, but probably wouldn't read again.
